Grant to underwrite free dance performances for East
Bay school children that will be given by two Oakland performing
arts companies, Artship Dance and Project Bandaloop, in May
and June 2003 at the Artship located in Oakland at Pier 84
on the Embarcadero. The City of Oakland has provided
a grant for the development of the performance and its presentation
and the Foundation's grant will assist by funding attendance
costs for East Bay elementary and middle school children.

General support for 2002-2003 production season for Aurora
Theater in Berkeley. The Company, founded by prominent
Bay Area actress Barbara Oliver, is often described as "chamber
theater" because of its intimate performance space and
its emphasis on subtlety, shadings of feelings and ensemble
responsiveness. A new performing space which will increase
audience capacity to 150 is being constructed in Berkeley
in the Arts District. The group offers acting opportunities
to talented Bay Area performers and its company has the highest
percentage of equity actors in the Bay Area.

Further support of Shakespeare in the Schools program
wherein actors from the Festival go to East Bay grade and
junior high schools to present scenes from Shakespeare's plays
and describe and discuss acting life. The program also
includes several special stage productions at the Festival's
theater in Orinda for school children.

Grant to support production of a 90-minute modern dance
piece inspired by Shakespeare's Hamlet choreographed
by outstanding dancer and director, Heather Harrington.
The dance piece will be a sequel to Ms. Harrington's production
of MacBeth supported by the Foundation. The dance
performance will take place at St. Mark's Church in New York
in the spring of 2004.

Trust, Lancashire, England
Final installment of three-year grant totaling $30,000
to support the establishment of a Shakespeare study and performance
center in Lancashire, England. Shakespeare has numerous
contacts with Lancashire and is thought to have spent time
at Hoghton Tower and Preston. The Center will build upon this
contact.

and choreographer Lawrence Pech entitled We All Fall Down

its various performances in Santa Cruz. This particular
grant will assist in the development of the presentation of
two performances of Bach's St. Matthew Passion in April

Fourth installment of five year grant totaling $250,000.00
for the presentation of World or American premieres of modern
operas at Santa Fe. The Opera is famous for its support
of modern opera and composers through presentation of premieres
and commissioning new operas. For the 2003 season the
grant will support the world premiere of Madame Mao
by Chinese-American composer Bright Sheng. The opera
is based on the life of Jiang Ching, the idealistic actress
who married Mao Zedong but became the vengeful director of
the Cultural Revolution.

Santa Fe, New Mexico
Grant to support Stravinsky Santa Fe Festival in August
2003. The festival will be a collaborative effort involving
the Santa Fe Desert Chorale and Santa Fe Promusica and will
through performances, public seminars and other special programs
which highlight the influence of Igor Stravinsky on the cultural
scene of Santa Fe through his many visits to Santa Fe in the
late 50s and early 60s.
