Further
support of Shakespeare in the Schools program wherein actors
from the Festival go to East Bay grade and junior high schools
to present scenes from Shakespeare's plays and describe and
discuss acting life. The program also includes several special
stage productions at the Festival's theater in Orinda for
school children.

Chanticleer, San Francisco, California
Grant
to world-famous male vocal chorus to assist in the commissioning
of a work to celebrate the 25th anniversary season of Chanticleer.
Sir John Tavener, one of the preeminent living composers for
choral works, will prepare a work Laminations and Praises
which draws upon Sir John's Greek Orthodox background in presenting
a liturgical drama which depicts the Orthodox conception of
Good Friday. The Libretto for Lamentations and Praises
will be written by Orthodox Abbess Mother Thekla. The work
will have its world premiere in 2002.

First
installment of three-year grant totaling $30,000 to support
the establishment of a Shakespeare study and performance center
in Lancashire, England. Shakespeare has numerous contacts
with Lancashire and is thought to have spent time at Hoghton
Tower and Preston. The Center will build upon this contact.

Grant for general operating support for organization which
develops young singers by giving them opportunities to perform
in various operatic settings as well as having roles in main

National Theatre, London, England
Grant
to support development of partnership between the Royal National
Theatre and ACT of San Francisco, through an arts education
program entitled Connections. Connections involves various
youth theaters and regional theaters in the U.K. and America
and offers young people between the ages of 11 and 19 the
chance to be involved in creating and producing plays. The
National Theatre and ACT will jointly commission a playwright
(Bryony Lavery) to write a play which will be rehearsed and
produced by ACT's Young Conservatory Youth Theater. The play
will be performed in the National Theatre in London in the
summer of 2001.

to support the scholarship fund at the Conservatory to provide
scholarships for students in opera theater. The Conservatory
partners with San Francisco area public schools to deliver
high-quality music education programs and provides free performances

and adults as well as providing a Bachelor and Master-level
collegiate program.

Grant for sponsorship of the Opera's revival of Verdi's
Falstaff for the fall 2001 season. The original production
was presented under the sponsorship of the Foundation in 1985.

installment of five year grant totaling $250,000 for the presentation
of World or American premieres of modern operas at Santa
Fe. The Opera is famous for its support of modern opera and
composers through presentation of premieres and commissioning

Grant to support presentation of "A Tune of Her Own",
a concert celebrating the work of women composers from the
12th century to the present day, to be presented in March,
2001, at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts.

Grant to support the development of a new play for the
historic Fallon House Theater in Columbia State Historic Park
